Maryborough Locals Excited About Reopening
Last Wednesday's Come and Try Night was a big success with over 20 excited locals coming to Hilltop Squash to give the refurbished courts a workout.
They were joined by a dozen or so Hervey Bay players who made the journey to Maryborough to sample the fruits of their labour.
Members of the Hervey Bay Squash community (including a few from Maryborough) have put over 500 hours of labour to bring the courts back to a playable condition.
Overwhelmingly Positive Response
The smiles on the players' faces told the story. It was great to have Squash back in Maryborough and it was great that the courts were looking so good and playing so well.
Hervey Bay Squash (HBS) President, Scott Whitcombe, was thrilled with the result.
"It was a big risk for our little club to take on such a significant project, but due to the hard work of our members and the great response of the Maryborough people, it has all been worthwhile so far."
"Centre owner, Steve Peters, has been flexible with the lease, local councillors have been generous with discretionary funds, and the local Handi Hire depot has helped out, so it has been a big team effort," he said.
Great Opening Attendance
Hilltop Squash hosted around 30 people for the Come and Try which was at the very upper limit of expectations.
These players will start to feed into the regular sessions planned for the coming week, plus any court hire that may be booked.
A Wednesday night and a Friday daytime session will be held each week leading up to Christmas, as a starting point. The online booking sheet will be open in the coming week.
More Players and Volunteers Wanted
As a community project, HBS will need the support of the local community to ensure long term success. They hope to use the remainder of 2026 to build a solid base of players as well as gaining a few volunteers along the way to assist with the operations of the centre.
